AKTIV vs Yo-Yo: The Standing Desk Stand-Off

Man and pretty girl standing at an AKTIV standing desk

The AKTIV 2 or the Yo-Yo Desk Pro2+: which is better? There’s only one way to find out…

You’ve decided to invest in a standing desk and for the past few days you’ve been researching your options. The budget’s a little tight, so you’re looking at the more purse-friendly options on the market. But you want to make sure you squeeze every last ounce of bang out of your buck.

That’s narrowed the field, and chances are you’ve arrived at a simple head-to-head between two closely matched, dual motor, height adjustable desks that very much fit the brief of being big on value and also big on quality: the Yo-Yo Desk Pro2+ and the Aktiv 2.

So which one should you go for?

Happily, we’ve done the hard work for you.

The specs

On the face of it, this isn’t any easy call. The desks are very similar. In the following spec table, most of the categories end in a dead heat. Whether it’s height range, load, frame colour options, or anti-collision detection (which stops your desk rising or lowering if there’s something in the way), there’s nothing to choose between them.

How do the AKTIV 2 and Yo-Yo Pro2+ differ?

Even where there is a winner (indicated in green in the above table), it’s often by a tiny margin. At 45dB, the AKTIV 2 is, according to IAC acoustics, virtually as quiet as a library. The Pro2+ is marginally quieter still. But the practical difference between quiet and, er, slightly quieter may not be a difference you’ll hear.

It’s a similar story with the speed of rising and lowering. The AKTIV 2 shifts at 32mm per second. The Pro2+ gets there a grand total of 4mm per second faster. We imagine you won’t be doing a great deal with all that time you’ve saved.

The AKTIV 2’s wins are a little more meaningful. A considerably larger width adjustment means you can put a larger desktop on the frame than you could with the Yo-Yo. That might not matter in most cases, but if you’re an architect in need of serious desk space, it could be a crucial factor. And although both brands offer roughly the same range of standard desk sizes (AKTIV 2 offers one extra option), there’s also the option to choose a bespoke desktop with AKTIV, to take advantage of that extra width.

There’s a USB socket inbuilt as standard with the AKTIV 2. You can add one to the Yo-Yo but it will cost you extra. That’s also the case with the desktop finishes. You get eight options included as standard with the AKTIV 2. Although there are ten options available with the Yo-Yo, only five are included in the standard price. You’ll need to pay an extra £25 if you want any of the other five.

The biggest difference between the AKTIV 2 and Yo-Yo Pro2+

Reading the spec sheets will take you so far, but there are some things the sheets won’t tell you. Take the issue of wobble.

Wobble is what happens when you type on a keyboard or click a mouse when the desk is extended to its full height. Ideally, you want your desk to be rock solid. If it isn’t you’ll see the evidence in a slight bounce on your screen. It’s not much (or at least, it shouldn’t be) but it can be more than enough to irritate you, and it can certainly be enough to make people calling you on Zoom wonder if you’re speaking from an earthquake zone.

You won’t find ‘wobble’ given a section of its own on the spec sheet. Often it’s something you’ll only really understand once the desk is in situ and you’re using it day to day.

But here’s the important thing to note: the AKTIV 2 has a level of stability virtually the same as standing desks close to twice its price. It is impressively, unquestionably stable. The Yo-Yo is pretty good too, but because of the differences in manufacture, the Yo-Yo level of ‘bounce’ is around double that of the AKTIV 2.

That adds up to a significant advantage for the AKTIV.

Standing desk warranties

We need to mention those warranties, which we’ve called a tie even though there’s a clear difference between the two. The Pro2+ offers a 7-year warranty. The AKTIV 2 comes with a 5-year warranty for the frame and motor BUT the desktop is guaranteed for 10 years.

Sustainability – which standing desk is kinder to the environment?

Both sit/stand desks use British grown, FSC-certified timber, so there’s nothing to choose between them there and the carbon footprint is low.

Both have frames and motor assemblies shipped from the Far East (Yo-Yo from China; AKTIV from Taiwan). Yo-Yo says its packaging is 100% recyclable. Not only is the AKTIV’s packaging reusable or recyclable, it’s also biodegradable and uses no harmful toxins.

Additionally, and to more than offset the carbon footprint of shipping a frame from the Far East, AKTIV plants 10 trees for every standing desk sold.

Standing desk installation

Assembling these standing desks isn’t challenging for anyone who’s ever done a little flat-packery in the past. 95% of our customers do it themselves although, if you’re buying several desks to fit out your office, you’d probably appreciate someone else doing it for you.

The Yo-Yo includes installation in its price (if you want it). The AKTIV 2 doesn’t, but it is available, and the more desks you need to assemble the cheaper that will be.

Price - which standing desk costs less?

Now we come to the crunch. First, we need to be sure we’re comparing like with like, so for both standing desks we’ve selected a 160x80cm desktop with frame in a rather lovely Nebraska Oak finish. The finish is included with the AKTIV. It costs £25 extra with the Yo-Yo.

We’re adding in a USB socket on the Yo-Yo (at a cost of £60). It comes as standard with the AKTIV 2. Here’s where that leaves us.

The Pro2+ costs £242.62 more than the AKTIV 2. True, you can get your Yo-Yo desk installed for that, but then you also have to wait 7-12 days for it.

Even with installation included on the AKTIV 2, it still comes in well below the cost of the Yo-Yo.

AKTIV 2 wins by a bounce and £242

So which is the better standing desk? As we’ve shown, from a performance perspective, bounce or wobble is the chief difference. Choose the Yo-Yo Pro2+ and you choose a really good standing desk that is, unquestionably, a tiny mite quicker and quieter in raising and lowering, but which offers a little more wobble than the AKTIV. Choose the AKTIV 2 and you choose a really good and very sturdy standing desk with more included as standard, greater sustainability credentials and a greater frame width that gives you more desktop flexibility.

But if the desk quality remains fairly close, it’s that price difference that’s the real clincher.

Because if there’s one thing that makes a good standing desk great, it’s finding it £242 cheaper than its nearest rival.
